It's April 20, 1775...

“We’re alone. The Redcoats captured Papa yesterday. I find myself filled with a mixture of emotions. Fear that something might happen to him, to us. Relief that Papa wasn’t one of the many men from town killed when the Redcoats stormed the green in force. Shame that I can find some joy in the situation when so many homes are filled with nothing but grief.

While I begrudge the British Soldiers who self-righteously violated our home as though we were nothing more than cattle, I can’t help but feel for the many wives, mothers, and children awaiting their men’s return in England who will never get to say goodbye to their soldiers killed these past two days. War, no matter how righteous the cause, is an ugly unforgiving thing.

One thing is sure, this war has only begun. Men have been pouring into Lexington from all over on their way to Boston. An army of patriot peasants shaking off their bonds of slavery has laid siege to the Redcoat garrison there. I can feel the distant rumble of cannons even now, the storm of freedom has awakened, and while fear of its great cost lingers, it does little to temper the excitement of what new world may be born on the other side.

Benjamin heard that Papa is being held on the prison ship in Boston harbor. The Smith’s have graciously offered to let us stay with them until other arrangements can be made, but Papa is all we have left. Benjamin proposed going after Papa himself, it was all I could do to talk him out of it. So it’s settled, we will all go and fetch Papa back. At dusk we’ll slip out of the house and set off to Boston.”

It's May, 1776...

It’s 1776 and they’re back. The king’s redcoats have landed on Staten Island, the harbor is so full of British frigates it looks as if all London must be afloat. The breathtaking spectacle has shaken the resolve of some, the victories at Boston a distant memory now as we prepare to confront the full weight of the king’s fury.

Henry, my beloved adopted father has joined the Continentals, but he won’t be fighting alone. We’re a family, and families fight together.

No matter what challenges lay ahead, we will endure them together, and perhaps, if we endure, so will freedom.

It's APRIL, 1777...

“It’s 1777 and King George has tired of our “little rebellion”, he’s commanded his finest generals to finish the war at once. General John Burgoyne is marching south out of Canada, and General Howe marches towards our capital Philadelphia from New York. General Washington and his fellow patriots are trapped in between. With the American dream dangling by a thread, it’s the perfect time for my younger brothers, Abraham and David, to pick a fight with a porcupine.

Only the Good Lord knows how we’re going to get out of this mess. Henry says the year ahead will be a test like none other we’ve yet to face. After the winter we’ve endured, I pray he is wrong. For better or worse, we’ll make our stand as boldly as we’re able and trust the Lord to look after the rest.”

What other kids are saying

5/5

The book’s words flowed very well with each other. The characters were so life-like they felt like real people. To be honest, the book was better than a very popular series on the Revolutionary War which I was reading right before this one.

I really enjoyed the book as it took me on an adventure back in time. From the perspective of someone my age, I was able to see what life was like back then and it was pretty cool. I loved the passion I felt as I read the book and I also felt anxious as to what was coming next. I never wanted to stop reading the book because it was just so great. I am excited to see what the author comes out with next, and I will definitely be first in line to read it!
